Discover AdBlue solution – an effective solution to reduce car emissions. Currently, the issue of vehicle emissions into the atmosphere is one of the most pressing concerns globally. Therefore, emission standards have been successively introduced: Euro 1 (1993), Euro 2, 3, 4, 5, and currently Euro 6, aiming to tighten the amount of emissions from vehicles.
Accordingly, to meet these increasingly stringent emission standards, diesel engines will be integrated with an SCR catalytic converter system using AdBlue solution, also known as DEF, for the purpose of treating exhaust gases. This is an effective method for converting harmful nitrogen oxides emitted from engine exhaust.
What is AdBlue exhaust gas treatment solution?
Letter AdBlue® DEF is a generic term registered and protected by the German automotive manufacturers' association, while the more accurate and commonly used term is DEF – Diesel Exhaust Fluid, which can be understood as the fluid used to treat exhaust gases from diesel engines.
AdBlue doesn't function like engine oil or lubricant; it doesn't come into contact with the internal workings of the machine at all. It's only sprayed into the exhaust system, so you can rest assured that the exhaust gas treatment solution won't affect the machine's lifespan.
How does AdBlue solution work?
With its main components being 32.5% high-purity urea, 67.1% purified water, and the remainder being other additives, AdBlue, when sprayed into exhaust gases, causes the high-temperature exhaust gas to evaporate, breaking down the urea into ammonia and isocyanic acid. The isocyanic acid then hydrolyzes into carbon dioxide and ammonia. The ammonia then combines with oxygen from the environment, reducing the amount of nitrogen released into the atmosphere. Simply put, this process involves AdBlue converting NOx gas into nitrogen (N2) and water vapor via an SCR (Sensor-Controlled Reactor) to NOx gas.

The chemical equation is as follows:
– (NH2)2CO -> NH3 + HNCO
– HNCO + H2O -> CO2 + NH3
– 2NO + 2NH3 + 1/2O2 -> 2N2 + 3H2O và 3NO2 + 4NH3 + 3O2 -> 7/2N2 + 6H2O
The overall equation can be understood as follows:
2(NH2)2CO + 4NO +O2 -> 4N2 + 4H2O + 2CO2
What materials is AdBlue made from?
As mentioned above, the main components of AdBlue are urea and distilled water, but the urea used in AdBlue is a high-purity urea with low biuret content, which helps prevent corrosion of the SCR system.

Dung dịch AdBlue sau khi được sản xuất thành phẩm thường là hợp chất không màu, không độc hại nếu tiếp xúc trực tiếp bằng tay do được làm từ Urea tinh khiết và nước cất đã khử ion.

Euro 5 standards for engine types
According to Decision No. 49/2011/QD-TTg dated September 1, 2011, of the Prime Minister, the roadmap for applying emission standards for automobiles and motorcycles follows Decision No. 49/2011/QD-TTg dated September 1, 2011, of the Prime Minister. Accordingly, from January 1, 2018, the emission standard must be raised to level 4 for automobiles put into use after January 1, 2018, and most recently, to Euro 5 standard for vehicles manufactured and assembled after December 31, 2021.
Accordingly, the Euro 5 emission limits for gasoline engines are stipulated as follows: CO: 1.0 g/km. HC: 0.1 g/km. NOx: 0.06 g/km. PM: 0.005 g/km (direct injection only). Euro 5 emission limits for Diesel engines: CO: 0.5 g/km. HC + NOx: 0.23 g/km. NOx: 0.18 g/km. PM: 0.005 g/km. PM – 6.0 x 10^11/km.
Using AdBlue helps ensure that emissions released into the atmosphere do not exceed the above parameters and maintain emissions within the Euro 5 or Emissions Standard 5.
Which car models come equipped with Euro 5 standards?
Currently, all vehicles assembled and manufactured after December 31, 2021, must be equipped with an exhaust gas treatment system (ADBlue) for the engine. Models such as the Ford Everest, Ford Ranger, Mazda, Toyota, etc., are no exception. Therefore, when purchasing a vehicle, it's essential to clarify this with the sales representative to avoid the problem of insufficient ADBlue during vehicle use, which could negatively impact performance.
